Install printer on Windows

The installation of printers on MS Windows systems varies in detail from one system version to another, but the steps are generally the same:

1. Start the "Add printer" wizzard. This is normally done by double-clicking the corresponding icon in the "Printers and faxes" (or similar) control window. Click "Next".

2. When asked for connection type, select "Networked printer". Click "Next".

3. Browsing for printers normally doesn't work, since we have so many different sub networks at Fysikum. Instead, give the printer name explicitely (after clicking the corresponding button) as: \\syscups.physto.se\"printername" where you should substitute "printername" for the real name of the printer, e.g. hpa5. Click "Next".

4. A window will pop up in which you will be asked if you accept that drivers be downloaded to your computer from the server. Answer "Yes". This will ensure that you get the appropriately tuned drivers for our printers so you can use all of their installed functionalities.

5. You will be asked if you want the new printer as the default printer. Make your choice and click "Next".

6. In the summary page, click "Finish", and you're done.

7. Since most Windows systems come with a preset default of "Letter" page size for all newly installed printers, you will have to do the following to avoid problems:

   • Right-click on the newly created printer's icon.
   • Select "Printing preferences"
   • Click "Advanced"
   • In the "Paper size" section, change "Letter" to "A4".
   • Save and close.

Repeat steps 1-7 for any other printer you want to use at Fysikum.
